The sweet iron and copper combination in this bit help to promote salivation and encourage softening. This bit does have a lever action.

A correctly fitting bit should have a fingers width on either side of the horses mouth. To ensure your new bit fits correctly measure the length of the mouthpiece from inside of the rings, as illustrated below.

Sweet Iron bits are designed to oxidize to produce a sweet taste which helps with mounting  The copper ribs will encourge mouthing but also ensure the horse will not take up too much of a contact ideal for horses that can take a hold.
